Rebecca and William | Engagement

I am SO excited for Rebecca and Williams wedding! I honestly cannot wait. Rebecca and William are really trying to make their wedding day so personal. How much more personal can it get when you're having it on the property that half of your family lives on? I actually met with this future bride and groom at the exact location of their wedding. It was so fun to explore the land...it was so beautiful. Rebecca's late grandfather happened to be quite the collector as well, so there were so many different details...it was incredible.

I love the way that Rebecca and William love each other. They're both so sweet and encouraging to one another. It was really a pleasure to hang out with them and hear about all of their plans! Enjoy!

Rebecca's Grandfather passed away the week before our session. It has been a joint effort by the family to clear the property of the collectables in order to prepare for the wedding. William mentioned that this was the last car he moved.

Also included at their wedding, hot air balloons and airplanes! This is the airplane that William and Rebecca will be exiting in!

Zoe! | Blessing

I can't say enough about this little girl. I love her so much! Zoe had a blessing done and afterwards we took a few quick photos of her, and then her mom just had to sneak in a few more of Zoe wearing the most adorable, GIRLY, leopard print hat. Complete with feathers, of course! We all love babies, so you can imagine how difficult it would be to try to pick a few to blog, especially when every single thing they do is cute. Here's a few! Rachel and Megan | Sisters!

Rachel and I have known each other for some time, it was so nice to hear from her when she contacted me about doing some photos of her and her sister Megan for their parents Christmas gift. This was the first time I had ever photographed sisters in their twenties! It was SO much fun. Rachel and Megan are both so beautiful and fun, and relaxed. I absolutely loved it. Parker | Newborn Session

Parker is such a little sweetie! And his red hair! I just couldn't get enough! I've actually known Parker's mom and dad since high school, so it was really great to observe them now as a family of three. :) It was hard to narrow it down, but here are just a few of my favorites from our session!

Melanie and Adam | Bluemont Vineyard Wedding, Bluemont, VA

I really don't have enough kind words to say about this couple. Melanie, Adam, and I connected instantly and I had been looking forward to their wedding all season. This was my last one of the year, so I feel that it was a perfect one to end with. :)

Melanie got ready at a friends home and was surrounded by her girls, champagne, and music. I loved the energy I could feel in that house. Melanie was so calm, yet so happy. It seemed as if she was just trying to take in everything that was happening. We headed to Bluemont Vineyard for their ceremony and reception, which happens to be one of my favorite venues! Melanie told me on their engagement session that she really wanted to incorporate fun details, and that she did! I was so impressed with what her and Adam had made.

When Adam arrived I gave him a hug. He instantly asked me, "How is she doing? Is she okay?" Their love is so genuine. My hope is that I was able to capture it.

The Simpsons | Family Session

Lindsey and Brandon | Gainesville, VA Wedding

Lindsey and Brandon may be one of the sweetest couples I've met. As individuals, but even more so as a unit. They started dating in 8th grade! In fact, Brandon used the cologne that Lindsey gave to him in 8th grade...Crazy! Lindsey and Brandon are fun and laid back. Nothing made that more apparent then the fact it rained, and snowed, on their wedding day. Neither one minded. This didn't phase them, they were in love. They were happy. They wanted nothing more than to get married, so the rain became more of a good luck charm. Even though I feel this couple doesn't need much luck. They grew up together, so I'm sure they've overcome many obstacles, but it was great to witness them starting a new chapter in a book that they have been writing together for years. Brandon and Lindsey tied the knot at Heritage Hunt Country Club, and it was a beautiful event!

Lindsey and Brandon, I feel so honored that I was able to capture your special day. I wish you a lifetime of happiness...and dancing! You two cracked me up! :)

Laurie and Anthony | Vint Hill Wedding

Laurie and Anthony booked me a long time ago, so I was so excited when their wedding day finally arrived! The leaves were finally starting to change and the atmosphere was so beautiful. Laurie and Anthony did a "first look" so we were able to do a bunch of photos before their ceremony. I love seeing the moment a bride and groom share when they see each other for the first time, but what I love most of all is that it doesn't seem to alter the moment they have when the bride walks down the aisle. Laurie did a wonderful job of literally putting together her entire wedding! Instead of a honeymoon, Laurie and Anthony bought a house. So, I'm excited for them to have some photos to hang on their walls!

Jenelle and Patrick | Engagement Session

Many of you know that I'm a nanny, for three amazing kids. Well, if it weren't for these two I wouldn't have that wonderful job! Jenelle and Patrick are my employers, but more importantly they're my friends. They're actually getting married in July and I couldn't be more excited for them! I'm actually one of Jenelle's bridesmaids, so for the first time ever, I'm going to try to participate in a wedding, and photograph that. How? I'm not really sure. Zaiden | 6 Months Old!

Oh Zaiden...he is such a cutie! I literally want to SQUEEZE him! Zaiden's mommy actually went to high school with me. She was my friends sister's best friend..got that? ;) Anyways, that's one element I love about my job. I love that I reconnect with people from my hometown a lot, and it's really fun! It's great seeing where people have gone, and watching their families grow. Farah really wanted me to come to their home so I could capture Zaiden's nursery. It was absolutely adorable! We ended the session with some fresh air, and Zaiden may have worn the most stylish 6 month jacket that I've ever seen! ;) Enjoy!

The Rodda's | Family Session

This family is so special to me! Misty and I have become great friends, actually since meeting to do her family photos last year. Since then she's started her own photography business (check her out here and leave her some love! She rocks) and I've been lucky enough to have her second shoot for me, as well as have play dates with her kids and the kids I watch....and play dates for just us! Her husband Stan is the pastor at New Life Christian Church, and he's pretty incredible as well, so check him out! Grant, Ashton, and Ava are SO much fun! I've really enjoyed getting to know each of them over the course of a year. I love each of their personalities, but most of all I love how comfortable they feel around me. We laugh, we hug, and we have some pretty awesome conversations. I met the Rodda's at Silver Lake Park in Haymarket, VA. This wasn't work to me...this was just hanging out with some friends! Enjoy!

Brandon and Lindsey | Engagement Session, Haymarket, VA

Last weekend I met up with Lindsey and Brandon in Haymarket, VA. This was my second time meeting Lindsey and my very first meeting Brandon. This couple is so sweet! Their wedding is in just two weeks and I'm really looking forward to it. We met at Brandon's sisters house. She has a ton of beautiful land and we really had a good time walking around the property. It's always a little nerve-racking and exciting to go to a place you aren't familiar with to take photos. I was so happy when I arrived! The woods and fields were a perfect back drop and we got lucky with some of the most gorgeous weather that October has to offer!

Lindsey and Brandon have been together for years. It was so much fun getting to know a little bit about them and their relationship during this shoot. I always highly recommend engagement sessions to clients. It's fun to get comfortable with one another, but it's also so helpful on the wedding day. Thank you Lindsey and Brandon! See you soon!

Juliana | 6 months!

I cannot believe this little cutie is 6 months old! I seriously feel like I was just taking her newborn photos. I absolutely adore this family. I took maternity photos for Lindsay, so I witnessed the excitement and nervousness of new parents. Then, when Juliana arrived I witnessed the exhaustion, the uncertainty, but most importantly this indescribable love. They are IN LOVE with Juliana. Now that she is 6 months old, it's changed again. I realize they're enjoying every minute of it, and the uncertainty has turned into relaxation. Juliana does nothing but smile now, which is a complete contrast of what she did at her newborn shoot. I'm so happy that they've chosen me to document this time in her life. She's so fun and just absolutely gorgeous. I've pretty much decided that 6 months may be one of my favorite ages, by far! "You're going to miss this" and Remembering to be grateful.

On October 2nd I was awakened by a mass text. "Hey guys! Just wanted to see if you all could make it out for Dad's birthday either one night this week or this weekend."My stomach drops. My dad's birthday was the day before, October 1st. And I, his daughter, forgot. I panicked and called my mom immediately. "Mom! I can't believe that I didn't call dad, was he upset?"
"Lo, he's fine. He knew you were shooting a wedding all day don't worry about it. He's fine. Do you want to speak to him?"
"Yes. Please."

Immediately my father answers the phone like he always does. This jolly, "Hello!" I start speaking a million miles per second, "Daddy, I'm so sorry. I had a wedding and I just didn't even..."
"Lauren, don't worry about it. It's not a big deal." I start to cry.

How could I forget my dad's birthday? I use to pride myself on always remember birthdays of family and friends. You'll almost always receive a call or a text...if you're lucky a meal or a drink. In that very moment I could not have felt like a more horrible daughter.
"Honey, why are you crying?"
"I just feel like I forget because I'm overwhelmed. I'm just tired...I feel awful."
"Listen, I know you're tired, I know you work a lot. It will work itself out. I know it may seem hard to believe, but one day when you're my age you're going to miss this. You're going to miss always being busy and having so much to do...all of the new things you're doing. You're still figuring out so much, and it's a lot of exciting stuff. Just hang in there. We'll celebrate one day this week or this weekend, whichever works best for you. I love you."
Seriously? My dad is incredible.

The past two weeks have been a roller coaster. Well, truthfully, the wedding season is always a roller coaster. Not to mention, this nanny business is HARD. However, it feels harder when I'm stressed out and when I'm tired. Lately, Jenna has needed a nap every day. I've felt my patience being tested constantly. Today I got annoyed because Jenna insisted on walking Bobo. (Like she does everyday) I said, "Not right now. I want to make sure he goes potty."
She insisted over and over again.
"Jenna, you always ask to walk him, and then you don't let him go to the bathroom. You're not very good at it."
Did I seriously just say that? Did I just tell her she isn't good at something? Her face...you could tell that I had really hurt her feelings. Where are my words? I thought. I can't remember anything? Not even MY kind words? Not even MY patience? Heck, I can't even remember my own fathers birthday, apparently!

After a few seconds I looked at her and said, "Jenna, I'm sorry. I was just frustrated. You can walk Bobo. You do a really great job actually. I just want to make sure that he goes to the bathroom, then he's all yours." She smiles.

In the car, Jenna says, "Lauren? I need to tell you something."
I turn down the music.
"What's up?"
"Well, I just wanted to tell ya that I love ya!"
"I love you too, Jenny."
She instantly falls asleep. We get home and I carry her in and lay her on the couch. I instantly think of what I can do while she's asleep. Work wise, that is. Then, I remembered what my dad said. One day, maybe I will miss this crazy life. I know I'll certainly miss Jenna and John, even the things that they do that drive me crazy. But, more importantly, I'll miss our special times together. So, I let my work go, and I laid down right next to her. I watched her little body rise and fall, grabbed her little hand covered in marker, closed my eyes and napped with her for 30 minutes.

How blessed am I? I'm busy, life is crazy, but I have the most loving and understanding family and friends on the planet. (Especially during this time of year) I'm healthy, business is good, and I watch these two AMAZING kids that love me. No matter what. I can't imagine myself doing anything else during this time in my life (Except for maybe sleeping, which I did accomplish!) Today, I decided that I needed to count my blessings and remember to be grateful...for everything. Because I will surely miss this.

Tamara and Kenny | Engagement Session

Last month I met up with Tamara and Kenny at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park in Fairfax, VA. Tamara and Kenny gave me the honor of choosing a spot. Now that I live in Fairfax county I find myself passing this park a lot and being extremely intrigued by it. From the road you can just tell that it is beautiful and it has lots of character. I'm glad that I was able to experience it for the first time with this sweet couple! I'm photographing their wedding in January, so I really enjoyed listening to them talk about their wedding plans. It sounds incredible! I can't wait!

I love engagement sessions because it really allows me to get to know a couple on a totally different level. Sometimes it happens to be the first time I actually meet the couple, which would be Tamara and Kenny's case. They are really adorable and make each other laugh constantly!

Maddy | 3 Months!

She just gets bigger and bigger. As soon as I walk into her house I pick her up and try and soak in her baby smell. Because her mother is a friend of mine, I feel like I have the right to do this. ;) I'm so happy to document Maddy's first year. Jen couldn't have gotten a more laid back baby! Carter | One year!

Jennifer and Ray | Arlington, VA Wedding

Jennifer and Ray are such a sweet couple! I had the pleasure of capturing their wedding day in Arlington, VA on the rooftop of Eventide Restaurant. It was a very small affair, and I loved how Jennifer and Ray were just surrounded by close family and friends, including Ray's twin boys! Here's a few of my favorites from the day!

Ray and Jennifer gave the boys special necklaces that represented them becoming a family and taking care of one another. It was the sweetest thing ever!

Happy Birthday John Parker!

If you were to ask John why he loves me he would reply, "Because she gives me two snacks." No, literally, because my friend asked him. If you were to ask me why I love John I would NEVER be able to sum it up to one thing. I would have to tell you a million different things. The funny thing is when I first started watching JP I felt like he really didn't care for me. I mistook his shyness for pure disinterest. Before I was technically hired I was asked to come babysit the kids for an evening, just to see if we connected. John Parker had taken a piece of paper and made circles of about a dozen colors. Some were your primary and secondary colors, but there were more than that. While eating dinner I said, "Which color is the color of my eyes?" Blue. I thought in my head. "Well, yours are more of this color, this aquamarine. You have a little bit of blue, but you also have a little bit of green." I laughed. "Oh! Okay!" I immediately thought that he was smart, but it wasn't until my first day of work that I showed up and the kids had to go to pre-school. When I got there John had drawn me a map of how to get to school from his house. Impressed is an understatement. In that moment, I knew he was special.

He got to choose whatever he wanted for breakfast! Red, well, Pink pancakes it is! After arguing with me for 10 minutes about whether or not he should be allowed to have six pancakes I gave him a choice, six baby pancakes or one big one!

I've said it over and over again that I believe God put me with Jenna and John for a reason. Jenna has many qualities that are parallel to mine. She's strong-willed and fearless in so many ways. She thrives off of socializing and loves being busy. (She get's this from her mommy. Jenelle and I discover almost everyday another reason why we're so alike.) I feel that when she becomes the most stubborn person on the planet, or complains that she can't possibly pick up because she's just, "too tired," that God is laughing at me. I think in a lot of ways Jenna is teaching me about how I handle myself. For a little while I wondered what lesson it was that John was teaching me. He's a logical thinker, he loves alone time, and he thinks that how something works is a lot more interesting then what it looks like. Oh, and he's a boy, so what could we possibly have in common? The truth is, besides those traits, John is sensitive, intuitive, and extremely empathetic. And when he laughs REALLY hard, he cries. John Parker teaches me A LOT about myself as well. :)

No birthday is complete without "Happy Birthday" by The Beatles.

John is now six. And lately he's seemed more independent as ever. As soon as he could swim he was off and didn't need me in the shallow end anymore. He had a "Jump Start Kindergarten" program for a week, and it didn't even phase him when he got on the bus. He smiled and waved from his window. I started to get teary eyed only because I was SO proud of him, and just genuinely happy for him. THEN, he told me that I didn't have to walk him to the bus stop, I could just watch him from the deck. Like, What? What is this? When did I go from the cool nanny to the lame adult? Well, he's crazy because he's not going to the bus stop alone. And the way I look at it, he was pretty appreciative with this rain that I was there to pick him up. So there! But honestly, it made me just a little bit sad that he didn't need me as much. On the day of the earthquake Jenna fell asleep on the couch and John looked at me and said, "Do you want to go lay in my bed and read books?" This never happens. I dropped everything I was doing and went right upstairs. We read for over an hour and fell asleep for a short time. I'll never forget that. I'll also never forget the day that we were driving home from Zoe's house and Jenna fell asleep in her car seat. JP and I laughed the entire way home. Non-stop. All over silly faces he was making. We both had tears streaming down our faces. I'm pretty sure that everyone in traffic thought we were crazy, but we didn't mind at all.

When he got home from school he got to open one gift. The second he'll have to wait until Saturday to open at his birthday party. He's been asking for a remote control car for weeks!

One day over the summer Jenna and Kaylee were both in time-out. (If you're a friend of mine insert "Shocker" comment here. ;)) They were both in separate rooms crying and continued to yell at each other through the doors. The rule is that your 5 minutes in time-out doesn't start until you've calmed down. So, needless to say, it was just me and John for a while. John was playing with his cars on the couch. I looked at him and said, "Buddy, what would I do without you?"
"I don't know!"
"Bud, I have to have 3 boys just like you okay? No girls."
"Yeah, you need to just have boys like me."
"The problem is that whether I have boys or girls isn't really up to me. What am I going to do if I have girls?"
(shakes head) "Miss Lauren, those girls will overtake you."
Oh John Parker, the voice of reason.

This was his face the rest of the day...along with yelling non-stop!

John Parker,

You blow me away every single day. Your knowledge fascinates me. I love that you love to be loud. I love that you think everything I do is funny. I love your kind heart and how much you care about all of us. I love that you're intuitive. If I'm having a bad day, you just know. I can feel it in your hugs. As much as your picky eating irritates me, I love that we've come to this place where you trust me enough to just TRY THINGS! I love how confident you've become and how at any given moment you'll talk to me about your muscles. I love how much you love music and how you sing in the bathroom every. single. day. I sometimes just walk up the steps halfway just to hear you. You crack me up! I love you for snuggling with me in the mornings and even though you're coming to this stage of independence, thank you for at least humoring me every time I ask you if you're okay. I love that when I go on crazy tangents about staying in the yard, being grateful, and how crazy girls are, that you just say, "Okay." A lot of times after my tangents are over I can only imagine how crazy you think I am. I'm so thankful for you. I'm thankful for your lessons every day, but most importantly for your unconditional love.

I love you buddy! Happy 6th birthday!

And for the record, you are the reason I want boys. However, your crazy sister makes me believe that I wouldn't mind having a crazy girl as well. ;)

Baby Zoe! | Newborn Session

Oh sweet baby, Zoe! I just can't get enough of her! On my birthday I was able to celebrate with a precious photo session with this little one. Nan is such an incredible mom. She's even more amazing then I thought she would be, which honestly seemed unimaginable. Zoe is such a blessing, and I couldn't feel more honored to be a part of her life! Now, for the good stuff...

She was not excited about laying on her stomach, however, her mommy worked some magic for this awesome shot!

I ended up referring them all to other photographers because at the time I just really wanted to focus on weddings and family portraits. This season I started doing the same thing again, then I thought, why wouldn't I do senior sessions? At least why wouldn't I just try it out? I think the thought of working with just one person seemed like a little bit of a challenge for me. Needless to say, I'm always up for a challenge, so this year I took just a few seniors!

Rachel is so fun and energetic! Not to mention she's absolutely beautiful! I couldn't of had a more relaxing session. Rachel's mom and sister came along and we all laughed and talked the entire time. I found myself being that person asking questions like, "So, what college do you want to go to?" and, "So, what do you want to major in?" You know, those questions that you dreaded answering over and over again? Well, I was that person. Luckily, when I apologized Rachel laughed and informed me she has a few options. Whatever you do, Rachel, I'm sure you'll be great! It really was so hard to narrow these down for a blog post, but I did the very best I could! ;)

I know that I blogged this photo as the first one, but I love it so much that I just can't decide if I like it in black and white or color! So, I blogged both!

Amelia | Newborn Session

Adaline | Family Session

One of the many things I love about my job is hearing from people I haven't seen or talked to in years. I get to see people I went to high school with get married, have babies, and build lots and lots of memories. I love re-connecting in that way. Joella graduated a couple of years before me and I remembered her instantly when she sent me an e-mail. I was informed that she had been married, and now had a little girl, Adaline. Joella, her husband Bryan, and their sweet girl Adaline currently run a Youth Group in Germany, so they were only home for a short time. I'm so glad that we were able schedule this shoot on their short visit! It was almost impossible to narrow these images down. Adaline could not have been any cuter! Or happier!

Daddy had a very special touch with this girl, he could make her smile instantly!

Laurie and Anthony | Engagement Session

I went to high school with Laurie, so when she asked me to be her wedding photographer I felt so honored! Laurie and Anthony make each other laugh constantly, which was so helpful throughout our time together. I could also tell that they were helping each other relax. Lauren and Michael | Nokesville, VA Wedding

So, where to begin... Over a year ago I was starting my business..and I was literally giving away photo shoots, to anyone that would have enough guts to stand in front of my camera. It's really the only way to go when you're first starting out, and I'm so glad that I did, because If I hadn't I wouldn't have gotten to know Lauren and Michael. Lauren and I actually went to high school together. (We even cheered together, but i'll leave those details out.) Lauren graduated a few years before me, and her younger sister Angela graduated with me. If you had asked me to describe them before this, I would have told you "sweeties!" The Birch girls are just sweet, thats the first word that would come to my mind. Angela actually contacted me to photograph her precious daughter, Camryn, and soon after Lauren asked me to take photos of her and her then fiance Mike.

The moment I met Mike I kept thinking, He's SO NICE. I could not get over how NICE he was. One of those people that you're just like, okay, you're a genuine person, there's no doubt about it. So, clearly, a "sweet" girl and "nice" boy belong together right? I honestly didn't know if Lauren and Michael would hire me to photograph their wedding, it was pretty far off, but I definitely hoped they would. So, when they contacted me I couldn't have been more thrilled. I met Lauren and Mike at Starbucks to sign my contract. At this point I was car shopping, so I brought my dad along (only because I knew Lauren wouldn't mind) so we could leave right after. The four of us just chatted about their wedding details and had some laughs...as soon as we got in the car my father said, "He is just crazy about her! I could tell...he just kept looking at her and smiling, and she's great. Good for them." My dad of all people said that...and he's not exactly a lovey dovey person, so that's truly how apparent their love is.

Lauren and Mike, I wish you a lifetime of happiness. I told you that what you have is rare, and I honestly believe that. There are times that I question if soul mates really exist, then I meet people like you. Best of luck! Stay in touch! And when you decide to have babies, you better let me take your family photos because they are going to be cute, cute, cute! ;)

Baby Madeline Ann | Newborn Session

On June 10th baby Maddy came into the world! Even after giving Jen specific instructions that she WAS NOT allowed to have Madeline while I was gone, (attending a friend's wedding) she came anyway. On my ride to Charlottesville my phone rang at it was Jen. I thought that it could only mean one thing, so I picked it up and said, "You're having a BABY!!!!!" Then I hear Jen's sister, Stacy, say, "Um, it's Stacy, but yes, she is!" Stacy and I have a pretty "sarcastic" relationship, so the fact that we were having such a serious conversation is pretty comical. She asked if I wanted to talk to her. I was shocked, Do people mind talking while they're in labor? Jen took the phone, and as soon as I heard her voice my eyes filled with tears. "You're going to be a mommy...I'm so proud of you." A few short hours after we hung up Madeline Ann was born. I received a text and a photo, and I smiled the biggest smile. As soon as I got home I made a point to get out to Warrenton and hold Maddy. She was more incredible then I imagined. Every time I hold her I honestly don't want to let her go. She's a great baby...however modeling proved not to be her favorite thing in the world. However, we had a good chat and decided that at 3 months she's going to cooperate. Yes, Maddy and I had a conversation. ;) Here's a few of my favorites!

Lindsey and Jay | Key West, FL Wedding!

"I thought that the date was going really well! Then he asked me if I was 'ready to go.'" Lindsey cracks me up! Two days after their wedding I met up with Lindsey and Jay for a drink in the Florida Keys. I realized that I didn't know their story. I was shocked. Usually at the engagement session that's one of the first things I ask! I'm a typical girl. I love knowing every single detail. The only thing I can think of is that Lindsey, Jay, and I connected right away. They felt like old friends from the beginning. So, maybe it was the lack of nerves or something that made us jump into different conversations the first time I met them? I'm not really sure. So, when I noticed that I had never asked I just had to hear it. I couldn't stop laughing. Lindsey and Jay are incredibly beautiful people inside and out. The thought of cute, sweet, little Lindsey feeling like she was being shot down after a date made me lose it. I love how honest she is. Jay's response? "Well, you know how when it's going well and you just want to end it on a good note? I felt like it had gone well, I didn't want it to go down hill the longer we hung out." Well, turns out, Lindsey never had anything to worry about. He basically asked her out again the next day and that was it. These two have this true, honest, pure love. I think that it's rare, and the fact that I got to document it makes me extremely honored.

Lindsey and Jay actually found me through my first bride and groom! Courtney and Scott were so amazing, so when I knew I was meeting with friends of theirs I knew they had to be great. Courtney and Scott were once just clients, now they're my friends. I'm so lucky to have worked with you two! And thank you for giving me a chance a year ago. I'll always remember my very first wedding, and how sweet and patient you guys were with me! Thank you, also, for giving me Lindsey and Jay! ;) An opportunity of a lifetime!

Lindsey and Jay, there are just not enough words to describe how thankful I am. This experience has forever changed me and my business. Your hospitality and confidence in me the entire time was just...unreal. You two are obviously the best of friends. I can only imagine what's next. Not only that, I'm so lucky to have gained you two as friends. So, Jay and Lindsey, I will end this on a good note! I can't wait to see you guys soon! Enjoy!

David and Kelly | Pennsylvania Wedding

I found myself checking on him constantly. "Are you okay? Are you sure? Do you need anything?" I was checking on my little cousin (that happens to be a foot taller than me) over and over as his wedding moment approached. The issue is that he hasn't felt like a cousin for some time now. I don't have any brothers, and honestly he's the closest thing I've got. I found myself thinking about the phone calls while he was at Bloomsburg University and I was at The Art Institute, the phone calls about a girl named Kelly that he just couldn't shake. Kelly and David have a very long history together, but people change, circumstances change, and they ended up taking a short break from one another. I remember talking David through it, telling him it would all work out. I honestly was saying things like, "I'm sure you'll find someone else." and, "Everything happens for a reason." I was saying the things that I thought I was suppose to say. However, as I would hang up the phone, I just felt like he wasn't going to find anyone else. He didn't want anyone else. Before I knew it they were back together, then they were engaged. I finally met Kelly for the first time when we did their engagement photos, and it was apparent, neither of them wanted anything else but each other.

I felt so many emotions. I was happy! I was a little sad because I knew that this made David's recent move to Missouri more permanent. I was a little nervous for him, and for her. I was watching my aunt give her first boy away. Most importantly I was watching my "little" cousin become a man. It couldn't have been more perfect. His brother stood by his side, and my uncle, his father, officiated the ceremony. (By the way, my uncle is seriously the man! If you're ever in York, PA check out Grace Fellowship Church!)

David and Kelly, I was absolutely honored to photograph your wedding. Your love for God and each other makes your relationship so incredibly special. I can't wait to see what the future holds for you. I love you both! And David, you finally got your girl! ;)

She exhales and crawls into my lap.
"Did you get me a present?"
She crawls down to the floor and I hand her a bag full of sandals that match mine, (because she insisted that it was a "great idea" for her birthday gift), a purple tutu, a polk-a-dot swimsuit, and a kit full of nail polish, lip gloss, and chap stick.
"WOW! Thanks, Lauren!"
I can tell that she's overwhelmed with excitement and she surrounds herself with each gift as she sits on her knees and goes around and around picking up each object over and over again. I sit on the couch and cover myself with a blanket.
"Lauren, I want to sit with you." "Lauren? I love you, Lauren."

As the age of four approached I would swear to you that Jenna and I became closer and closer. It was like I could see the age of three fading, and honestly, I'd be fine never seeing it again. Time-outs aren't as often, and definitely not as dramatic. She's now empathetic to the things she says to me, her family, and her friends. And now, more than ever, she makes a point to tell me throughout the day that she loves me, usually followed by a hug or a kiss each time. I told Jenna's mom today that I love her and her brother so much now that I can't even imagine what it will feel like to have kids of my own one day. I know that my heart will expand beyond measure, but I can't even fathom that...it's already expanded beyond words. They have me wrapped around their fingers. Without a doubt.

Jenna,
The day I started watching you I was hooked. Your dancing...your singing..your outfits! Your big brown eyes melt my heart every single time I look at you, which honestly makes it hard to discipline you sometimes. I love you for being so strong-willed, even though it's our biggest struggle. I look at you and I see a reflection of myself. In fact, almost every time I call my own mother to tell her a story about you, she laughs and says, "That sounds familiar!" A girl that loves wearing dresses, but loves playing with boys. A girl who can cry at the drop of a dime, but isn't afraid to speak her mind...AT ALL. I know you're in my life to teach me a big lesson, Jenna. I will figure it out one day, but I'm extremely thankful for the small lessons you teach me each day. Nobody makes me laugh more than you do.

Happy Father's Day, Daddy!

When I think of my dad, the first thing I do is laugh! Seriously. My dad is hilarious. If you've met him, you know exactly what I'm talking about. As a kid I actually told my dad that he should be a comedian. Today, we have a debate about who's the "best-looking" and the "funniest" in the family. Of course, I think it's me, and he thinks it's him. The irony is that it's just the two of us having this conversation. So, we may or may not be a little biased. ;) When we ask my mom to pick she says, "How did Elaina and I get excluded from this competition?" Look, when you have a father that walks down the stairs and says things like, "Man, I'm good looking." Or, "All of the girls always wanted me, I just turned them all down." You learn to give him a taste of his own medicine.

My dad and I have a very honest and open relationship. There was a time that I would have told you that this would never happen. There was a time that I would have told you that I hated my dad. Yes, I feel awful even typing those words, but it's true, and he knows it. I would have sworn to you that all my dad ever wanted to do was ruin my fun...or my life! When people first started getting their license I wasn't allowed to ride with them. Wearing make-up was not allowed, for what seemed like forever. And dating? Forget it. I remember slamming my door on multiple occasions and telling my dad that I would never speak to him again. We wouldn't speak for a few days. I snuck out, I rode in cars anyway, I borrowed my friends make-up at school and put it on in the bathroom, and I dated anyway. Well, as much "dating" as you can do until the age of sixteen.

My dad and I had a really hard time from ages twelve to seventeen. This was quite the contrast from when I was a kid. My dad and I were best buds. He took me hiking, camping, and fishing before I could even walk. He taught me about The Beach Boys and The Beatles. Though I insisted on wearing dresses or a skirt EVERY DAY, I was still never afraid to get dirty. My mom referred to me as a "prissy tomboy."

My dad introduced me to sports and was literally the typical dad when it came to injuries. "Walk it off," and, "Lauren, if it were broken you would know it," were common statements made. One day, after a soccer tournament I was in the backseat of our car and told my dad I wanted to be a cheerleader. I still remember his look in the rearview mirror. Shock? Disappointment? Pure Confusion? Eventually he warmed up to the idea. He thought the fact that I was a flyer was pretty "cool." And some nights after gymnastics practice I'd ask him to come in and watch me tumble for a while. That actually impressed him. I gave him a little bit of a break for a few years and started playing softball during my off-season. And for quite some time that was our "thing." We spent countless evenings playing catch, having batting practice, and working on strategy. When I was asked to start playing catcher, I'm pretty sure that he may have been the proudest daddy at those softball games. By my junior year of high school I had to make a decision. At one point I was on three cheerleading squads, which was ridiculous, and I had gymnastics a few nights a week. I gave up softball, but I think that all along he knew that I would.

High School for me was amazing. For mine and my dad's relationship it was horrible. At one point I needed advice about a boyfriend. My mom was out of town on business and my dad said, "Well, why don't you just tell me? I'm sure I can handle it." His advice? "Go to school tomorrow and ignore him. He'll realize that he's wrong." Well, I followed my dad's advice, and I got dumped. When I asked the boyfriend why he dumped me he replied, "Well, because you ignored me at school all day today." I came home angry and in tears. All my dad had to say was, "Good. He wasn't for you anyway. He seemed like a jerk. You'll know when you find someone for you." Seriously? That was the LAST thing that I wanted to hear. Of course as a high school girl, you literally feel like that's the end of the world. Needless to say, I didn't take his advice on boyfriends for a another few years.

Now that I'm older my dad and I just have this understanding. We don't agree on everything, in fact a lot of times we agree to disagree, after a good debate. (He's who I get my stubbornness from.) Since I've moved out I feel like it's almost brought us even closer. Now he calls me because he sincerely misses me, not to ask me where I am or if I cleaned my room. I feel like I can ask him advice, or even just vent to him, and he actually listens to me. Not only does he listen to me, but now I feel like he's completely open and honest with me. There's been multiple occasions that he's said, "Alright, well since you're an adult now and not a little girl..."

Dad,
Thank you for giving me your eyes. I'm thankful for your hair as well, even though you tell me that I "don't appreciate it" due to the fact that I dyed it.
Thank you for making me "tough," but for also noticing when I just need to be a girl and cry sometimes.
Thank you for teaching me all about the outdoors, The Beatles, and photography. I know that you and mom are my biggest fans when it comes to this passion of mine. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher.
Thank you for teaching me good morals and values, and for never backing down. I wake up everyday praying that I do the right thing and that I continue to be a good person. I know that I wouldn't feel that way had I not had your guidance.
Dad, thank you for enforcing over and over again that I need to have high standards in a man. Though I thought you were crazy and annoying for so long, I now know how important that is to you, and I hear you. I promise.
And Daddy, thank you for never taking anything I said seriously during those years. I didn't mean it, obviously. :)

Patrick, Rose, and a baby bump | Maternity Session

I met with Rose and Patrick at Burke Lake Park for a maternity session. I was really looking forward to this because I had spoken with Rose a few times on the phone and she just sounded so incredibly sweet! Patrick and Rose just moved to Northern Virginia, so I was thrilled to do this for them! I'm also doing newborn photos...so stay tuned!

All they did was make each other laugh! I love it!

The Alfieri's | Family Session

I met with this awesome family a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved getting to know them! Rachel and Pablo were so sweet, Sophia was full of energy, and Matias...well, Matias is 2! So he's full of personality and is so curious. I honestly just let the two of them run around and do their own thing for a while. Rachel and I talked for a while after the session about how important it is to capture your kids just as they are...the good and the bad, because honestly it will trigger, if anything, a hilarious memory! I met Kelley and Greg at The Virginia Arboretum for a couples session. They just purchased their first home in Culpeper and can't wait to fill it with photos of the two of them! The entire day the sun had been out, then it became cloudy and I was extremely bummed. However, we got lucky and the sun peeked out just a little bit towards the end of our session and it was absolutely stunning. I loved watching Kelley and Greg interact. They honestly just make each other laugh...constantly.

At my house there is a drawer. A drawer that contains hundreds of photos. We actually attempted to organize it a few years ago, but we were only somewhat successful. There are photos of the week my parents brought me home, mine and my sisters pre-school graduations, the day I got my first car, proms, and vacations. What I started to notice is that most of the photos are of me and my sister, or of us with our dad. It seems that my mom was always the one taking the photos, and unfortunately, I'm notorious for "ruining" family photos. I'm always sticking out my tongue or sticking out my butt. Even in our family home videos there's a constant sound of "Lauren, please stop...Lauren, don't stick out your tongue that isn't nice...Lauren, we just want one nice clip of you not shaking your butt." What can I say? Not much has changed. ;)
I haven't been an easy kid. I'm the first to admit to that. After you have a shy, sweet, calm daughter like my sister, I think I shook my parents up pretty good. I never did anything awful...but let's just say that I found my voice at a young age and I never stopped using it. I made dinner conversations interesting, I came home past curfews, got way too many speeding tickets, and injured myself on numerous occasions doing something stupid. My dad definitely did the disciplining, which pretty much consisted of me being grounded.. A LOT. My mom, however, always let me off after a few days. I love her for that. For always giving me another chance, even when she probably shouldn't have.

(This photo stays on our refrigerator. Basically because everyone loves making fun of my look. So, maybe I was a little confused!)

Since I've become a nanny I find myself connecting with my mom on a different level. I need advice. I need reassurance. I need to know that every emotion that I feel is normal. Her encouragement means everything to me. At the end of every conversation I have with my mom she never fails to say, "And Lo, I'm very proud of you, and I love you." In that moment, that means everything to me.

Mom,
I wish that I could put into words how much you mean to me. Thank you for always letting me know that you love me no matter what, because I know that I'm not always easy to love. Thank you for your acceptance, because I know that I've always kept you on your toes. Most of all, thank you for being my mom, and for being proud to say that you are. I hope that I'm half the woman as you one day. I love you more than you'll ever know. xoxo.

Juliana | Newborn Session

The last time I saw Lindsay and Peter was at their maternity session. At that point they didn't know the sex of their baby, and they weren't expecting the baby until at least April 1st! Well, Miss Juliana had other plans. Just a few short weeks later Lindsay and Peter became parents to a beautiful little girl! In fact, when they had Juliana was right around the time I blogged their session. When I didn't hear back from them I was really nervous. "Maybe they didn't like their photos?" I thought. Luckily, I received a sweet e-mail from Lindsay a few weeks later letting me know that they loved their photos and that Juliana's birthday was quite a surprise. She was two weeks early! But, she is quite a little doll! :) Juliana had a hard time, but I reminded Lindsay to relax and be patient. I ended up getting more photos than I expected, and when their session came to a close I ended up holding Juliana for about 30 minutes while small talking with Lindsay. What can I say? I LOVE my clients!

As I stand in the kitchen I hear the clonking of high heels. I look down and see a little brown eyed girl wearing my shoes, and my necklace.
"Wow, Miss Jenna! You look beautiful!"
"I'm playing princess."
"Well, you sure do make a pretty princess."
"Lauren, I need to tell you something."
"Sure! What's up?"
"Well....um...well?"
I start to laugh. "Did you forget?"
"Well...Ryan told me that he didn't think that I was pretty." She hangs her head.
I squat down and grab her hands.
"Jenna, you are absolutely beautiful. I'm sure he didn't mean it. What did you do when he said this to you?"
"I was weally sad."
"Can we have a big girl talk for a second? Look at me. Your whole life people are going to hurt your feelings. Even when you're a grown up like me, people are still going to make you mad, or sad. They may even make you cry, but you have to learn to be tough, okay? If someone hurts your feelings you need to let them know and then you need to walk away."
"Even when I'm as big as you?"
"Yep. Even when you're as big as me."
"You've cried before?"
"Sure."
"Wowwwww. Who made you cry?"
I start to laugh. "I'm not sure. I don't remember. Okay, so if someone hurts your feelings you let them know and then you walk away. Got it?"
"Awight."
"Please use kind words though, okay? Just say, 'That wasn't very nice and you hurt my feelings.'"
"Awight" She starts to walk away. "Lauren, I'll never make you cry okay? I pwomise." (Little does she know! ;))
"I'm sure you'll hurt my feelings sometimes, Jenna. That's okay though. It happens."
"No, no, no. I weally won't. Okay?"
"Alright, sweetie."
About five minutes later I walk into my living room and I find Jenna dancing...
"Who's that pretty girl I see over there?"
"ME! You're talking about me!"
"You're right! I am!" And I give her the biggest hug in the world...

Melanie and Adam | Engagement Session

"Well my best friend, Adam, proposed to me on Christmas morning and we set our date for 11.21.11 (one day before our 5 year anniversary!)" Those were some of the first words in Melanie's first e-mail to me. Right away I thought it was incredibly sweet for her to share that information with me, but also to refer to Adam as her "best friend." I finally met Adam and Melanie in person and right away I could tell it was true. They are literally best buds, and so much fun to be around. We happen to have a few mutual friends, which made me feel like I already new them. Last weekend we went to Lake Braddock Park to take engagement photos. Earlier in the week the forecast had called for rain, then for overcast. We lucked out completely! The sun came out and it was beautiful!

Okay, so I have to admit to something. I CANNOT do a serious face to save my life, and I really wish I could. These two pull it off beautifully!

As we walked around we talked a little bit about how Melanie is extremely active. Okay, so as I'm looking through my photos I just keep looking at her arms. I'm SO jealous!
